A gift still counts as a full ownership transfer
DVLA doesn't have a separate category for a gifted car. Whether money changes hands or not, you're the registered keeper transferring the vehicle to someone else, and the same V5C process applies either way. Skipping it, or assuming a family transfer is informal, leaves you listed as the keeper on record, which matters the moment anything goes wrong with the car after you've handed over the keys.
Road tax never transfers, not even between family
Once DVLA processes the change of keeper, any remaining road tax (VED) on the car is cancelled automatically. You get a refund for each full month left on the tax, backdated to the date of transfer. The new keeper starts from zero. They can't drive the car on public roads until they've taxed it in their own name, and they can't do that until the registration change has gone through.
The V5C steps, in order
- Fill in the new keeper's details on the V5C, either online at gov.uk using the document's 11 digit reference number, or by posting the completed form to DVLA.
- Tear off the green new keeper supplement (V5C/2) and hand it straight to the family member, it's what they use to tax the car.
- Keep the yellow sold or transferred slip for your own records, in case a question ever comes up about when the handover happened.
- DVLA posts a fresh V5C in the new keeper's name, usually within a few weeks, so don't be surprised if the old document is still 'in transit' when they're already driving.

Insurance and tax gaps that catch families out
A family transfer feels informal, and that's exactly where people slip up on the bits that actually carry legal weight.
- Driving before the tax is sorted is an offence on the new keeper, gift or not, the moment they get behind the wheel.
- Your own insurance stops covering the car the second it's no longer registered to you, so the family member needs their own policy in place first, not after a first drive round the block.
- An unrecorded or undervalued transfer can complicate a future insurance claim, since insurers work off the declared value on record.
- If the car later becomes part of a family dispute or an estate, a documented market value at the time of the gift is the only thing that settles who's owed what.
Should you still put a value on the paperwork
You're not required to declare a sale price for a genuine gift, but skipping a value entirely is short sighted. It's the one figure that protects both sides later: it settles an insurance claim cleanly, and it heads off an argument down the line if other relatives ever question what the car was actually worth when it changed hands. A free valuation takes two minutes and gives you a defensible number to write down, rather than guessing.
Check what your car is actually worth before you hand over the keys. It costs nothing, and it's the figure you'll want on file if anyone ever asks.
What else to square away before the handover
Two more documents matter more than people expect on a family transfer. Our guide to the V5C logbook when selling a car covers what happens if the document is missing or out of date, which comes up often on an older family car that's sat in a driveway for years. And if road tax on the vehicle was paid annually rather than monthly, our piece on the road tax refund when selling a car explains exactly how DVLA calculates what comes back to you.

What to sort before you hand the keys over
Update the V5C the same way you would for a sale, hand over the new keeper slip, and expect your road tax to stop the day the transfer registers. The family member needs tax and insurance in place before the first drive, not after. Write down a value even though no money is changing hands, since that's the number that saves an argument later. Get those four things right and a car gifted within the family causes no more hassle than one sold to a stranger.
